Facilitating Wayfinding Using a Hypermedia Representation of Spatial Cognitive Maps
نویسندگان
چکیده
Navigation in large-scale natural environments is not new and has been dealt with some success across various cultures and species in the animal kingdom. Currently, interest in navigation and wayfinding has been revived by difficulties users usually experience when navigating through large-scale 3D computer virtual environments (CVEs). In this paper, the facilitation of wayfinding in such environments using non-geometric representations of space is explored. Our main concerns are to illustrate how a representation of cognitive maps of the space under navigation can be constructed so that it can be exploited to aid space knowledge acquisition, its maintenance or repair, the solving of navigation queries, and, the formulation of navigation commands for autonomous navigation. We support the ideas introduced with a description of an example navigational aid for 3D CVEs, together with the windfall benefits that this approach brings as far as history mechanisms, navigation in shared virtual 3D environments and collaborative wayfinding are concerned.

Individual differences in spatial cognition and hypermedia navigation
One mental ability crucial for navigation, both in the real world and in a v i r t u a l environment, is spatial cognition. This review will discuss individual differences in spatial cognition and wayfinding; and how these differences could effect n a v i-gation in a virtual environment. Other human aspects, as cognitive strategies and personality factors, related to navigation and the use of c...
متن کاملFinding the way: a critical discussion of anthropological theories of human spatial orientation with reference to reindeer herders of northeastern Europe and western Siberia.
In anthropology, research on human spatial orientation (wayfinding) has centered on two conflicting theories: the "mental map," whereby humans build abstract cognitive representations of the spatial relations between objects, and "practical mastery," which rejects the idea that such abstract representations exist and, in its most developed form, suggests that wayfinding is a process of moving f...
متن کاملWayfinding and cognitive maps for pedestrian models
Usually, routing models in pedestrian dynamics assume that agents have fulfilled and global knowledge about the building’s structure. However, they neglect the fact that pedestrians possess no or only parts of information about their position relative to final exits and possible routes leading to them. To get a more realistic description we introduce the systematics of gathering and using spati...
متن کاملCognitive principles of schematisation for wayfinding assistance
People often need assistance to successfully perform wayfinding tasks in unfamiliar environments. Nowadays, a huge variety of wayfinding assistance systems exist. All these systems intend to present the needed information for a certain wayfinding situation in an adequate presentation. Some wayfinding assistance systems utilise findings for the field of cognitive sciences to develop and design c...
متن کاملComparing the complexity of wayfinding tasks in built environments
Wayfinding is a basic activity that people do throughout their entire lives as they navigate from one place to another. Many theories of spatial cognition have been developed to account for this behavior; however, most of the computational models focus on knowledge representation (e.g., cognitive maps) and do not consider the process of how people structure wayfinding tasks and space. This pape...
